Wish I Was This Good

If you haven't already, you must go check out the fantastic work of Jonathan Levitt. Most of his photos are of scenes in Maine, where The Girl is from. I can also say that his prints are affordable and make great gifts. Check him out right now.

Yo Semite!

The Girl and I are heading out to Yosemite in early may and we're planning on doing a mixture of car camping, backpacking, and touring Sonoma county on our way back to SFO. Very much looking forward to getting out and seeing it all. Here's our planned hike. Hope to see you out there.

This is Fly

Flyfishing mags tend to fall into three categories: high-concept and stuffy with lots of early Fall black and whites of old men who spend small fortunes to fish the Deschutes or Madison, low-concept one-step-above-bait-chucking mags with lots of shots of dudes mindlessly flogging the water for Steelhead, and The Drake which is sort of its own thing with its own audience.

Along came This Is Fly, which is more of a hipster zine about flyfishing than anything else with playlists and art featuring artists even your cousin in art school hasn't even heard of. It's a real departure from the bucolic, wicker and tweed stuff you tend to see in this category.

With good photography, middling writing, and spotty editing, you get the sense that it's really someone's work of passion, so if you're expecting a polished publication, look elsewhere. But if you want a fun FF mag with nice pictures that you can read at work, get yourself an e-copy.

What's cool about it is that is has such an of-the-people feel while also remaining very highbrow in certain ways that it's easy to flip through. Oh yeah, it's also very free. Check it out right now.

Trove General Store

At my cousin's wedding in Chester County, my boyhood home. Took a detour to Trove General Store in Paoli and it's a pretty nifty place to score Filson and Woolrich woolens. Mostly at full price. The concept was cool though, and it's nice to see the old hood getting some of that urban woodsman love, but all in all, nothing more than just what's hip all in one place. Great place to shop for gifts, I would imagine.

Totally worth a stop if you find yourself on the outer reaches of the main line and are looking for some Filson duds.

Dream House Norge

This is pretty much my dream house and I'm pretty sure The Girl agrees.

Red Fox Inn

The Girl and I hit the Red Fox Inn in Middleburg, VA for the V-Day celebrations. While it was a lovely space, often frequented by JFK and Jackie O in their heyday, for what we paid I was rewarded with a mushroom risotto that resembled poster paste and The Girl was rewarded with a pork chop that could have doubled for a hockey puck in a pinch. Overall, great ambiance, but lackluster food.

The champion of the evening was the Hunt Country Chardonnay from Piedmont Winery in Virginia. Slight sweetness, a surprising oakiness given the lack of oak aging, and a really well-rounded wine for the price and, well, that it's from Virginia...
